Skin Cancer of the Head and Neck: Understanding Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Skin cancers of the head and neck are common since these areas are frequently exposed to sunlight—one of the most common risk factors for skin cancer. By understanding the risks, symptoms and treatment of these types of cancer, you can prevent and manage these conditions.

If you are concerned about skin cancer of the head and neck or have received a diagnosis, it’s understandable to feel stressed and concerned, but you don’t have to manage this time alone. Our ENTs at Mid-Michigan ENT can ensure you receive the highest level of support and care.

Types of Head and Neck Skin Cancers

  • Basic cell cancer: This is the most common form of skin cancer. Though it isn’t usually fatal, it can be locally aggressive.
  • Squamous cell cancer: The second-most common skin cancer, it is more aggressive than basic cell cancer and may require extensive surgery.
  • Melanoma: Though this is the least common form of skin cancer, it is responsible for more deaths annually than squamous cell and basal cell skin cancers combined.
