Speech Audiometry

Traditional hearing tests measure your ability to detect sounds at various volumes and frequencies. In contrast, speech audiometry measures your ability to understand and recognize speech. This test can sometimes uncover hearing impairments that may have gone unnoticed with standard hearing exams.

Speech audiometry is a quick, simple test, usually lasting between five to ten minutes. The test is comprised of two key components:

• Speech Reception Threshold (SRT): Measures how loud speech needs to be for you to recognize it.
• Speech Discrimination (SD): Evaluates your ability to understand and repeat words spoken at a volume you can comfortably hear.

Both of these results are scored and plotted on an audiogram, which shows the degree of hearing loss and your comprehension ability.
