Spasmodic Dysphonia Diagnosis & Treatment

Spasmodic dysphonia is a neurologic voice disorder that causes involuntary spasms of the vocal cords during speech, leading to a strained, tight, or “broken” voice quality. Diagnosing this condition requires careful listening, laryngeal examination, and understanding how the voice behaves in different speech tasks. One of the most effective treatments is laryngeal Botox®, which gently reduces the involuntary muscle spasms and allows the voice to move more freely. Treatment is customized to each patient’s voice needs, and dosing is carefully adjusted to achieve the most natural and comfortable vocal quality.

Vocal Tremor Assessment

Vocal tremor causes rhythmic shaking or quivering in the voice that can make speech sound unsteady. Because vocal tremor can be related to neurologic, muscular, or age-related changes, a clear diagnosis is essential. We use specialized voice tasks, stroboscopy, and multidisciplinary evaluation to determine the source of the tremor and guide treatment options, which may include targeted voice therapy, Botox® treatment, medical therapy, or a combination approach.
